Columbia, Missouri's commercial real estate & businesses are focused on health care, education and the insurance business. These Boone County businesses are often called recession resistant, creating a growing commercial real estate market serving Central Missouri and surrounding areas. Over half our residents hold bachelor’s degrees, and approximately 25 percent possess graduate degrees. The University of Missouri is far and away the city’s leading employer. Columbia is also home to Stephens College and Columbia College.

Health care is a large sector of Columbia’s economy, with nearly one in six people working in a health-care related profession and a physician density that is about three times the United States average.

Columbia’s hospitals and supporting facilities are a large referral center for the state, and medical related trips to Columbia are common.

Jobs in government are common as well, either in Columbia or a half-hour away in the Missouri state capitol of Jefferson City.

The medical industry is another driving force behind Columbia’s economy. University of Missouri Health Care administers four hospitals in town.

Boone Hospital Center operates numerous clinics and outreach facilities. Columbia is also home to Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital. The University of Missouri Research Reactor Center, the largest facility of its kind in the country, produces radioisotopes used in nuclear medicine.

Columbia is known for business innovation, as well. MBS Textbook Exchange, the nation’s largest provider of new and used textbooks, was founded in our city. Socket Communications, Carfax, Datastorm Technologies Inc. and Slackers CDs and Games launched their enterprises here. Missouri Employers Mutual, Shelter Insurance and Columbia Insurance Group also built their headquarters in Columbia. State Farm Insurance has a regional office in Columbia, as well.

Columbia Regional Airport provides air travel in our area.

For the sports-minded, Columbia offers many fun ways to keep in shape. Recreational opportunities are available at over 40 area parks. Joggers, walkers and bikers enjoy the many hiking trails in Columbia such as the MKT Nature and Fitness Trail, a 4.7-mile urban walkway through Columbia's beautiful greenbelt. The trail also connects with the Katy Trail State Park, the largest rails-to-trails conversion in the nation, stretching 185 miles across Missouri.

Columbia is also home to the largest state game competition in the nation. The Show-Me State Games is an annual Olympic-style sporting event for the whole family.

Of course, fall Saturdays are all about Tiger football at Faurot Field on the campus of the University of Missouri. You can also catch the madness of Tiger basketball at Mizzou Arena in the winter and early spring.

Columbia boasts a vibrant music scene. Catch live acts at The Blue Note, a famous downtown venue. A variety of performances are also held at Jesse Auditorium and the Missouri Theater Center for the Arts.
